Residing and practicing in Athens, Greece, Gera1 is a renowned visual artist with a unique style that marries his background in graffiti art with his formal training in fine arts. His focus lies in reimagining reality with a recurring theme of contrasting colors that challenge the viewer's perception of the world around them.
As a graffiti artist, Gera1 uses spray paint as his primary medium to create large-scale compositions that merge the real and the surreal. His unique approach to graffiti art challenges traditional notions of perfection by embracing visual glitches and fragmentation. In his latest work, Gera1 takes his unique style to abstract-shaped canvases, where he experiments with antithetic materials to optimize the application of his artistic vision.
Gera1 writes about the Athens experience:
Athens is mostly characterized as a city with ancient history and modern expression. The city invites you to walk, stroll, get lost, and discover more unknown treasures!
It's 10:00 am, and I walk to the train station and board
I’m wearing headphones, observing the route through the window. I realize that this city has experienced enormous changes through the centuries.
"Next stop, Omonia." It's time to get off. I exit the station towards the Square and walk down Panepistimiou street.
Some were here, our journey begins.
First stop - Exarchia. An area full of murals, graffiti, and street art created by so many different artists, reflecting a great political and social history. After wandering around Exarchia, I head towards the Psiri neighborhood, and stop off at Romantso’s. It's a venue that mainly represents the underground scene of this city with electronic and experimental music, parties, concerts, and other projects.
Going a little further, I reach the Central Square of the area. Here and in the surrounding alleys, you can see equally emblematic murals from various important Greek and foreign artists, as well as a wide variety of restaurants, “koutoukia,” bars, and entertainment centers!
“Let's wander together”
